Macknade Scones

A staple in our cafe, this recipe is super easy and can be adapted to suit any of our wide variety of cheeses.

  • 800g plain flour
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 litre milk
  • 85g butter (diced)
  • 200g grated cheese (50g less if using blue cheese)
  • 1 egg


  1. Mix the flour and baking powder together.
  2. Add and rub in the butter.
  3. Add your choice of cheese to the mixture.
  4. Add the milk and mix until it forms a ball of dough.
  5. Sprinkle your work surface with flour and roll the dough out so it is between 1 and 2cm thick. Cut the dough into rounds with a cutter.
  6. Place the rounds on a tray covered in baking paper and wash the tops with a beaten egg.
  7. Bake at 200C for 15-20 minutes (This is based on a medium sized cutter, so reduce the time if it is smaller).
  8. Remove from the oven and check. They should have a slight golden look and be fluffy in the middle.
