Gluten-Free & Alcoholic?

We’ve been exploring our gluten-free alcoholic drinks range. It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it!

Most commercial beers will naturally have gluten in from the malted wheat or barley used in the brewing process. However, more and more brewers are starting to create a gluten-free offering. Here’s some of our favourites!

First up is Kent’s own Westerham Brewery who proudly certify all their bottled beer as gluten-free! This is done by the addition of an enzyme which breaks down the gluten before bottling. Each batch is then tested to make sure the gluten is undetectable. You can even check these results on their website! We currently stock six of their bottled beers, but the Hop Rocket Indian Pale Ale is a favourite. This is a deep golden ale with a thirst quenching bitterness.

Another way to create gluten-free beer is to use gluten-free grains during the brewing process. St Peter’s Brewery do just this and use Sorghum, which is a naturally gluten-free South African grain, to brew their pilsner/lager style beer.

If you fancy a naturally gluten-free alcoholic alternative, then Gosnells Mead is a must. Mead is made from a combination of brewed honey and water, making it a great, light alternative to beer. We strongly recommend Gosnells dry-hopped mead, as it simultaneously retains the characteristically clean, honey sweetness, but has a remarkably dry finish.

Another beer alternative that’s great for a sunny day is Hollows & Fentimans gluten-free alcoholic ginger beer. These come in two choices, a traditional one, or one with a spicy kick. Both of which are super refreshing and thirst-quenching!

If these drink have caught your fancy, you can find them all in-store now. We will even treat you to 15% off St Peter’s gluten-free beer from Friday 17th March to Sunday 19th March, the perfect way to welcome in the weekend!
