Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Creating a sustainable shopping model that not only supports our Trinity of Staff, Suppliers & Customers, but our environment and planet as a whole.
Quite rightly, we get asked lots of questions about what we are doing to reduce our impact on the environment and we want this to continue. Sustainability has always been a core driver in our actions and we are making a revived promise to keep it at the forefront of our decision-making.
We’ve recently put in motion several exciting projects with the aim to reduce our impact on the environment. Here’s a summary of what we’ve been up to…
Unpackaged at Macknade
Don’t miss our recently installed dispenser system, allowing you to fill your own containers with loose dried goods.
Ranging from rice to pulses, muesli to confectionary, our Unpackaged dispensers are situated next to the Macknade bakery and are super easy to use. Simply weigh your container before weighing it again with the product inside!
Not only are you eliminating the need for any single-use plastic, you can also buy the exact quantity you need, meaning less food waste.
Macknade Fresh To Go with MightyFineThings
We have been working in partnership with local producers MightyFineThings to launch a fresh and ready to eat range in-store.
The new range includes salads, galettes, quiches and dips featuring the MightyFineThings range of products and will showcase similar products from other suppliers & producers in future.
Surplus fresh produce is used in each of the recipes, with the aim to further minimise food waste in-store. This means that the product range is changing on a weekly basis and there is always something new to try.
Glass Milk Bottles from Hinxden Farm Dairy
We are now stocking milk in glass bottles from Hinxden Farm Dairy on the Kent/East Sussex border. The milk comes from a herd of pedigree Guernsey & Holstein Friesian cows and is the next step in reducing our plastic usage in-store.
All we ask for is a 50p deposit on each bottle, which will be refunded when the bottle is returned to us. The bottles then go back to the farm to be sterilised & re-used. Win win!
Recorked Collection Partner
We have recently signed up to become a recorked collection partner! Recorked is a charitable initiative setup to encourage the recycling of wine corks, of which millions end up in landfill each year.
For every cork collected, a % of the profits are donated to Recorked’s nominated charities and free corks are also given to various charities & schools for use in craft projects.
Look out for the collection point in-store.
Boutilliers x Wild Bread
Not us per se… but our neighbours on-site have also been collaborating in an effort to reduce food waste. The boys at Boutilliers (our on-site brewers) are using surplus bread from Wild Bread (our on-site sourdough bakery) that would otherwise go to waste to make beer! Keep an eye on Boutilliers’ Instagram for what’s available…
