With Valentine’s Day coming up, our Guest Blogger, Saskia, has got you covered with ideas for an impressive home-cooked three course meal.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and the restaurants are getting booked up, but not to worry, we’re here to help! This year, why not avoid the hassle of going out and treat your loved one to an impressive home-cooked meal with these romantic recipes.


For starters we’re thinking Swedish fish, and no, not those red gummy sweets, I mean gravadlax. This is a sophisticated Nordic fish dish that is lovely and fresh and a great way to start any meal.

Simon Hopkinson has a fantastic version of gravadlax, with a couple of typically Scandinavian sides!

If you’re not a big fan of planning ahead, then Jamie Oliver has a speedier version which can be made the morning of the dinner, taking only 5 hours to cure.

Why not up the romance and serve your Gravadlax with a side of oysters for a truly sophisticated seafood starter… (They’re also an aphrodisiac, if you catch my drift).


For the main we travel from Scandinavia to Italy and present you with a dish that is so enticing it even seduced the likes of Scarlett Johansson in the film Chef. Spaghetti aglio e olio is an incredibly easy and delectable recipe that takes about 15 minutes to make, with lovely fresh flavours of sweet caramelised garlic, parsley, lemon and a hint of heat.

Nigel Slater has an even simpler version of aglio e olio, missing out the lemon and parmesan. If you want to make this more traditional then simply add the juice of 1/2-1 lemon, depending on taste, and a handful of parmesan.

For those of you who want to keep it simple and spend less time in the kitchen, there is always Jamie Oliver’s, omelette aux fines herbes. With a name like that, who wouldn’t be impressed?


If your loved one still looks like they need a little woo-ing, this dessert will do the trick. We’re turning to the goddess of seduction, Nigella Lawson herself, for a gooey chocolate lava cake, which of course she very sweetly calls molten chocolate babycakes. The recipe for these chocolatey bundles of deliciousness can be found here.

These puddings can be served simply with cream, or you can couple them with another Nigella recipe, her coffee liqueur ice cream.

And there you have it! I hope that these recipes bring much joy to your Valentine’s Day meal and make it a day to remember. If you’re dining alone, you could halve these recipes and treat yourself to a romantic dinner for one. Alternatively, our COOK ready meals are nearly as good!
