The second in our blog series from Drinks Buyer, Ellie Gann… What to enjoy on Christmas Day itself!
Most of us like to start Christmas morning with a glass of something bubbly to celebrate with and if you want something other than champagne or prosecco, there are lots of options from Kentish vineyards. If money is no object then the Balfour Brut Rosé from Hush Heath is a definite winner, but if you’re looking to spend a bit less then we would suggest one from Chapel Down’s range (whose wines were incidentally served at the royal wedding!).
We have plenty of local wines to enjoy with your Christmas turkey too, and what you choose is largely dependent on taste. We like the Gusbourne Estate Guinevere – a buttery Chardonnay with only a hint of citrus. Alternatively, you could go for Bacchus from Chapel Down, which is a fresher, dry white.
If you prefer beer with your Christmas dinner, a light, citrusy ale or lager will compliment your turkey well! Kernel Table Beer or Canterbury Brewer’s Canterbury Lager are both good choices.
A stout or heavier dark ale (Shepherd Neame Double Stout, Old Dairy Brewery Snow Top or similar) will perfectly accompany your rich Christmas pudding and a Christmas mead works well as an after dinner treat (try Lyme Bay or Biddenden!).
Bramley and Gage’s Quincy liqueur is also a good alternative to dessert wine, holding the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, and will go well with your cheeseboard too.
If you’ve overdone it slightly by Boxing Day a glass of Big Tom tomato juice mixed with tabasco, Worcestershire sauce and celery bitters will do the trick. If you’re feeling brave (or are a firm believer in hair of the dog!), add vodka as well.
